Professor Karen Ginn offers an online course for clinicians on Functional Rehabilitation of Shoulder Muscles. The course will explore a rationale, evidence-based approach to determining and progressing patient-specific therapeutic shoulder exercises.

Professor Karen Ginn

Hi, I’m Karen.

I have a special interest in the treatment of shoulder dysfunctions. I'm currently a member of the Board of the International Confederation of Scientific Societies for Shoulder and Elbow Therapy.

I'm involved in research related to the assessment & treatment of shoulder dysfunction. I'm a musculoskeletal physiotherapist in part-time private practice and I also teach functional, applied musculoskeletal anatomy.

Karen’s EMG research at the shoulder girdle over the last decade has moved our understanding of motor strategy at the shoulder, in particular how to translate this to clinical practice. Exercise prescription is the mainstay of management for most shoulder disorders.

This easy, clear to follow web-based course takes you systematically through the basic science of anatomy and muscle functionality providing an evidence base for when, why and how you may choose to prescribe specific exercises. I have used Karen's research in my daily practice and in educating others, it has been key in improving my clinical reasoning and patient outcomes, I would highly recommend this course to anyone wanting to better understand the shoulder.

Through her research Karen has helped us to reach a higher level of understanding of the function of the rotator cuff. This have given physiotherapy a new pathway to both assess the functional shortcomings and how to restore shoulder muscle function in a comprehensive way.

I highly recommend Karen’s on-line course. It will make a huge difference to your exercise selection as well as to the efficacy of your treatment to achieve higher outcomes for your patients with shoulder dysfunction. I also recommend that you have one or more colleagues take the course at the same time as you. To do the assessment together followed by the clinical reasoning on how to choose the most appropriate exercise and how to plan exercise progression will make it much more straightforward.

Since 2015, I and my colleagues at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, have worked according to these new insights into shoulder muscle function. It has been a challenge to leave behind old strategies, but it has been rewarding as patients, regardless of their presenting shoulder pathology, reach higher function and at an earlier stage with this new approach.

Logical and thorough .... the framework/way of thinking presented in the course is very helpful to more accurately understand and provide greater certainty in assisting clients/patients who experience shoulder symptoms.
